WHAT IF? now has a blog. On tap right now, a first-hand account of the March 2009 presidential elections in El Salvador.
Nearly twenty years after the civil war ended, in spite of vicious negative campaigning and attempts at fraud by the right, the FMLN, party of the former guerrilla insurgency, has won the presidency. In El Salvador's nearly 200 year history as a nation, it has never before had even a liberal party in charge.
Read all about it, from an on-the-ground-observer's point of view, in the WHAT IF? blog.

An exercise in envisioning the ideal society as HOME.
"We know that utopia means nowhere. As Sir Thomas More, who popularized the use of the term 400 years ago, was aware, the paradox of the truly good society is that it exists nowhere. But I have been there, repeatedly, in my imagination, and the exercise of entering that world, moving around in it, and discovering its specific qualities: sights, sounds and smells, has always been a powerful one. It clarifies, sharpens and deepens my understanding of why, in a more abstract way, I believe the things I do. And it is surprisingly simple." read it here

Does the concept of utopia make a DIFFERENCE? For centuries people disenchanted with society as it is have debated whether imagining an ideal world is good, bad or indifferent in terms of producing social change. Here you can read selections from visionaries, writers and regular folks on utopia, pro and con. Send us your own thoughts and we will publish them on the Utopia Corner page.

WHAT IF? Journal of Radical Possibilities is dedicated to exploring what it means—often in very practical terms—to imagine a better world, a world not re-formed, but trans-formed. It is unique among the journals of the day in its focus on visionary movements in history and visionary activism in the present. It is also unique in its focus on an aesthetic of revolutionary and transformative beauty. By presenting the work of radical poets, artists, activists and writers both current and historical, we offer an uncompromisingly intelligent and beautiful picture of human possibility. We look for roots and branches, we look for what endures in the quest to make humanity more humane. We also celebrate resistance and struggle and do not reject conflict as a necessary aspect of this process. Read more about us here.
