Like Picasso, I see art as
an “instrument of war against the enemy,” or, as revolutionary
writer Ngugi Wa Thiongo said: “Art is more powerful when working
as an ally of the powerless than it is when allied to repression.
For its essential nature is freedom, while that of the state is restriction
and regulation of freedom.” Words like these let me know I’m
aiming my combative collages in the right direction.

This project, the brainchild of Josh MacPhee and the justseeds political art catalogue, proposes to produce ten posters a year to comemmorate people and events often overlooked by the historians of the status quo.

From 1997-2004, I worked on
the staff of Cleveland Jobs with Justice. Jobs with Justice is a
national network of local coalitions of unions and labor organizations,
community groups of various kinds, and social-justice oriented religious
groups.As a staffer for Cleveland JwJ, the time and energy I had
available for photography were naturally very limited. It’s
a funny way to take pictures—running or helping to run an event,
and grabbing the occasional picture. But here are some of the results.

Fool Puppet Intervention
In the decade after its founders
K. Ruby and Amy Christian first met and conceived the idea of bringing
large-scale puppetry and processional theater to Bay Area political
protests, Wise Fool became an essential participant in what had seemed
to be a vanishing tradition in the U.S.: community-oriented folk
art and street performance.
